Tzumo Arpad Olah

Tzumo Arpad Olah was born into a musical family. He started playing the piano at the age of seven. He studied classical music at the Weiner Leo Conservatory (Hungary Budapest), after he received a scholarship to the Ferenc Erkel School of Jazz Music.His first success was the first prize of the Hungarian (Bela Bartok) Radio's talent competition, which was a scholarship for 5-week summer course at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Since 2001, he has had a lot of success in the international field, as well. In the summer of 2001, Tzumo received the first prize for the best Trio and for being the best soloist at the "Jazz an der Donau" competition.In September 2001, his Trio took part in the Jazz Hoeilaart International Contest competition, For the first time in the competition, Tzumo won all three of the main prizes : for the best Trio , and for the most creative performance piece, and he also received the prize for best soloist.

In the same year, his first record, "My Time"(EMI), came out. In 2002,he also received scholarship and continued his studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied with Joanne Bracken. In 2003 he applied and got accepted to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.He has performed with Monk Institute Band, featuring Terence Blanchard, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Kenny Garret and Clark Terry, Hal Crook ,Terry Lyne Carrington in the United States, Europe and Japan. In 2002, he was also granted the Emerton Award and the prize for the year's Young Jazz Talents from the Hungarian Radio.

In 2003 he was selected among the 50 most successful young talented artists.. His record, "My Time", received Hungary's musical award, the Gramophone. He graduated from the Monk Institute of Jazz University of Southern California in 2006. After the graduation he moved to New York where he is been started to working with young generations of jazz musicians Like Frank Nemeth ,Lionel Loueke ,Arturo Stable .Today, you can find Tzumo living in EU,and New York. He has recently been working with T.E.D and writing and producing records to EMI artist Bery.

1.) How did you first hear about Open Labs?
     I first heard from a friend of my in Canada.

2.) What Production Station do you have?
      I purchased the Miko LXD.

3.) How has the gear changed your method of work?
     I am able to work everywhere around the world no matter where you plug the Miko in USA or in EU! Work Flowing!

4.) What is your production station's primary function, live or studio?
      It's my studio Piece. But also using on gigs that's why is amazing couse,when I making a new sound I am able to play on the gigs.

5.) What is your favorite software on the board?
     Guru and Sylenth!

6.) How do you use it?
     I use Cubase 5 and Reaper to record, for a gig I use RiFF and Ableton live.

7.) Which kind of equipment have you owned in the past and how do they compare to your Open Labs equipment?
     Well I use a Mac with Logic.and I have a Mark 1 Fender Rhodes ,Korg Z1 and Yamaha MM8. But with the Miko I can use any sounds from my synths using Mimik!

8.) Has the gear changed the way you write songs?
     Yea definitely! With Miko I can do everything right away to recording guitar and to recording vocals etc.. it's a professional home studio and very strong. Never freezed if I using all kinds of many plugins...You don't need anything else to do your job.

9.) How different is the composition process compared to the standard computer or laptop system?
     Miko has a great vibe ! after this I don't use laptop or drum machine couse the BUMP MP is amazing!!

10.) Do you think the quality of your production now would be possible with another keyboard?
       Nooo! it's the best keyboard on the market.! 2.33GHz Intel Core2 Quad with keys, come on!!

11.) Have you had any experience with our Tech Support and how does it rate with you?
       Yea. I always watching on online and chating helped to me on many things!

12.) What is next for you and your Production Station?
       Producing and writing two Albums to an Hungarian ( EMI )Artist Bery ! and touring with my band Electronic Dreams in Europe on the summer. You can check it all out to my site.
