Something We Already Know: iPhones/iPad’s are Revolutionizing Music Making and Beatmaking

Nevermind that we just posted a video about the microwaving of an iPad. We know the value of this technology and would never do such a thing. At least most of us wouldn’t…

To most people, the iPhone is a cellphone with interesting extras. But to musicians like Tom Freeman, a Bay Area producer who records as Freematik, the device is a portable replacement for a roomful of music gear. Freeman made an entire album with his iPhone. His beat-and-synth-heavy “iMatik,” which he self-released in March, deals in hip-hop’s curt synth lines and turntable scratchings. It doesn’t sound like something a cellphone could create. Freeman and other tech-savvy producers and composers say the sonic possibilities allowed by the iPhone and its larger cousin, the iPad, could revolutionize music-making.

Reaktor ensembles and instruments part 1

One of the most versatile plug-ins available on the market today is Native Instruments Reaktor. This plug not only comes with great sounding synthesizer, sampler, effects processor, groovebox, step sequencer, and much more, there is a community of users and programmers who use Reaktor to build their own ensembles. Some of these are made available for free, others are available at (generally) reasonable prices. Below are some links to extra content for Reaktor.

Contest: Remix Contest Voting Begins Now!

A few weeks have gone by and all submissions have been turned in for the Remix contest that Open Labs and Beatport.com have co-sponsored. English DJ and record producer Norman Cook, better known as Fatboy Slim, offered his ‘Weapon Of Choice’ track to be remixed by Beatport’s aspiring producers. ‘Weapon Of Choice’ saw success on both UK and US charts and its accompanying music video, directed by Spike Jonze and featured Christopher Walken, received cult-like praise.

Voting is now open through April 20th where you can now spin the various submissions. The winning remix will be released on Fatboy Slim’s Skint Records as well as receive free music downloads from Beatport and Open Lab’s professional studio tool ‘DBeat,’ a grand prize package worth over $4000.

Check out the submissions and vote HERE!

Videos: Using Your iPhone/iTouch Plus Beatmaker AND the NeKo!

This is one of my favorite How-To Videos that we have here at Open Labs. Open Labs product developer Matthew Presley demonstrates how to use the iPhone/iTouch application Beatmaker in conjuction with the NeKo TSE. Although it’s an older video, hopefully those of you using Open Labs gear plus an iPhone or iTouch with the Beatmaker software installed will learn a new skill!

You can download Beatmaker from the iTunes store at http://itunes.apple.com/app/beatmaker/id285512415?mt=8.
